DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Akagera national park
Upon arrival at Kigali international airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your driver guide. After a short safari briefing, depart Kigali and enjoy a scenic 2 to 3 hour drive east to Akagera national park, passing through rural countryside and hillside villages. On arrival, check into the lodge and relax.
Day 2: Full day game drive
After an early breakfast, embark on a thrilling full day game drive through the diverse landscapes of Akagera. While on the game drive, look out for elephants, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, rhinos and lions. You will stop for a picnic lunch at one of the scenic spots in the park. After, you will continue exploring the northern plains which is the best area for big game sightings. After return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Morning game drive and boat cruise on Lake Ihema
Rise early for one last morning game drive since early morning hours offer the best chance to catch predators like lions or leopards still active before the heat of the day. After the rewarding game drive, return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, head to lake Ihema for a peaceful boat cruise. Glide along the shores and enjoy close encounters with hippos, crocodiles and a variety of water birds such as African fish eagles, herons and kingfishers. After return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe national park
After breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on a scenic journey southwest to Nyungwe national park one of the Africa’s largest and oldest montane rainforests. The journey takes you through Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, tea plantations and rural towns. On arrival, check into the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe and canopy walk
In the morning after breakfast, head out to the park headquarters for a briefing. After the briefing, venture into the lush rainforest with experienced guides in search of a habituated troop. Once the chimpanzees are located, you will spend an hour with them as you learn their feeding patterns, breastfeeding and watch them play. After, return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, head out for the iconic canopy walk a 70 meter long bridge suspended above the forest offering breath taking views over the green canopy and a chance to spot monkeys and birds from above. After the canopy walk, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Waterfall hike and tea plantation visit
After breakfast, enjoy a guided hike to the beautiful Isumo waterfall, one of Nyungwe’s hidden gems. The trail takes you deep into the rainforest, crossing streams and rich biodiversity with the soothing sounds of bird songs and trickling water all around. After the hike, return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, visit one of the nearby tea plantations. Learn about Rwanda’s world renowned tea growing heritage, tour the lush fields and interact with local farmers. Taste fresh tea straight from the source before returning to your lodge.
Day 7: Transfer back to Kigali and departure
After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey to Kigali. enjoy a scenic drive through terraced hills and picturesque countryside. Depending on your flight schedule, you may stop for local crafts shopping and visit a Kigali café for lunch. After, you will be dropped off at Kigali international airport for your flight back home.
