Location Of Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe national park is established in the southwestern corners of Rwanda and is one of Africa’s oldest and most diverse rainforests. The exact location is not only that important to understanding its unique flora and fauna but also key to appreciating its ecological, culture and geographical relevance. GEOGRAPHICAL COORDINATES

Nyungwe national park is located in the southwestern part of Rwanda next to the border of Burundi and lying adjacent to lake Kivu to the west. Its approximate geographic coordinates are

The national park has an area cover of 1,019 square kilometres and its part of the larger Albertine rift which is an arm of the great rift valley and it’s known for its biodiversity and high levels of species endemism.

Nyungwe national parks southern border lies just a few kilometres from Burundi specifically the kibira national park which acts as an ecological extension of the park across the national boundary. The two parks from form the largest contiguous montane forest ecosystems in the region.

Karongi district

Karongi district lies in the western Rwanda along the shores of lake Kivu one of Africa’s great lakes. It’s found north of Nyamasheke district which directly borders nyungwe national park. the districts capital is kibuye a picturesque lakeside town for its islands, boat safaris and serene atmosphere.

Although karongi isn’t physically bordering nyungwe, it enhances access, adds cultural richness and improves the flow of tourism in the western side of Rwanda. Karongi acts as a buffer zone for tourist traffic and environmental sustainability. The district is 75-90km from gisakura which is one of the main entrances to nyungwe and it takes 3-4 hours by road to reach the park depending on the route. The distance from Nyamasheke district to Gisakura reception centre is 41km as well from Nyamasheke to Uwinka reception centre is a 59 kilometres drive. A drive from Kigali to the district is 219 kilometres and 216kilometers drive from Rubavu.
